How We Assess Our Partners

bluesign Criteria & Standards

At bluesign, we ensure safer, more sustainable production by holding our partners to clearly defined, science-based standards. Developed and managed by our experts at bluesign Academy, these criteria and assessments help manufacturers, chemical suppliers, and brands reduce their impact on people and the planet while supporting transparency, safety, and continuous improvement.

What Are bluesign Criteria?

bluesign Criteria are strict, expert-driven standards created by bluesign Academy to evaluate the safety and sustainability of chemicals, materials, and production processes. They are continuously updated to reflect the latest science, regulations, and industry best practices.

They cover:

Illustrative iconChemical safety
Illustrative iconResource efficiency (water, energy)
Illustrative iconPollution control (air, wastewater, waste)
Social Responsability IconOccupational health and safety
Illustrative iconLegal and social compliance

Materials and processes that meet these standards may be labeled as bluesign® APPROVED, and consumer products made with approved components can carry the bluesign® PRODUCT label.

Why Our Standards Matter

bluesign® APPROVED means more than safety – it’s a commitment to better processes, better products, and a better future.

By managing inputs rather than relying solely on output testing, bluesign helps prevent pollution at the source. Our assessments empower partners to meet regulatory requirements, protect workers and ecosystems, and deliver products consumers can trust.
